SCHOOL FOOD & FIBRE CASE STUDY // Boonah State High School

Boonah State High School
Paddock to Plate Program

Boonah State High School held its first-ever Paddock to Plate event in 2023, offering a luxury dining experience featuring produce grown and harvested by the students themselves.

This event allowed students to apply industry skills in real-life scenarios, showcasing the collaborative efforts of the school’s engineering, hospitality, agriculture, and construction students. Hospitality students worked closely with a professional chef to plan a seasonal menu and agricultural students executed a horticultural project, growing seasonal produce like broad beans, snow peas, radishes, carrots, beetroots, and basil, which were all featured on the menu.

The school’s Cattle Club and Poultry Project also played key roles, with students raising Highland Chickens and providing eggs for the event. Construction students designed and built the school’s chicken coop, further enhancing the project.

Primary Industries Education Foundation Australia applauds the Boonah State High School community for their innovative approach to food and fibre education, giving students valuable real-world experience. Following the success of the 2023 event, the school is already planning another Paddock to Plate event in 2024.
